Akron has reached a tentative agreement with one of its unions that includes raises, but neither side is willing to say how much.George Johnson, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 1360, said he didn’t want to divulge details of the wage reopener before sharing them with his members during two informational meetings on Friday. The union will vote Wednesday on the proposal.“It ain’t the greatest and it ain’t the worst,” Johnson said.Johnson said the agreement is better than what the city initially offered, which basically equated to no raises this year.“They won’t be 100 percent happy,” he predicted of his 405 members, most of whom work in the public service and public utilities bureaus. “They will accept it.”The union will have informational meetings at noon and 5 p.m. Friday at the Laborers Local, 720 Wolf Ledges Parkway. Union members will vote from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Laborers Local, with a meeting following at 6:30 p.m. when the results will be announced. If union members approve the agreement, it will go to the Akron City Council for a vote.Patty Ambrose Rubright, Akron’s interim personnel director, called the proposal “a fair agreement for everyone.” She is hopeful the city will also be able to reach agreements with the approximately 330-member fire union on a wage reopener and with the 260-member Civil Service Personnel Association (CSPA) on a full, three-year contract.“I always have hope,” she said. “I think when you are dealing with a number of unions, when they can see you present a tentative agreement adopted by one union, I’m hoping others see it in a similar fashion.”The city and fire union are set to begin arbitration at the end of March. CSPA and the city are expected to choose a state fact-finder Friday, but are continuing to talk. The three unions were seeking raises, especially in light of how the police union received them from a state conciliator after long and difficult talks in January 2011. The police union got a 1.5 percent raise last April, another 2 percent Jan. 1 and will receive 1 percent July 1.The city will begin negotiations on full contracts at the end of this year with the police union, fire union and AFSCME.
